The Vascular Mechanobiology Laboratory aims to understand and prevent the progression of cardiovascular diseases through the use of experimental and computational models. Experimentally, through studying cellular responses due to altered mechanical stimuli. Computationally, by creating models to predict arterial behavior and disease progression over time.
Available Positions
Graduate Student: We are looking for graduate students to start in the Fall/Spring of 2024. Knowledge in biomechanics, cell biology, mathematical methods, tissues culture, finite element analysis, matlab, FEBio and java is desired. Students will receive a stipend, health insurance and tuition waiver for their entire PhD. Graduate students have the opportunity to work on the project developing a computational model of growth and remodeling during atherosclerosis: integrating biology & mechanics. Project aims to create an automated model that captures the biology (via Agent Based Modeling), wall mechanics (via Finite Element Analysis), and hemodynamics (via Computational Fluid Dynamics) of an evolving atherosclerotic artery. See Figure 1. Mentoring Team (from left to right of Figure 2) Stefano Leonardi Associate Professor in Mechanical Engineering Heather Hayenga Assistant professor in Biomedical Engineering Clark Meyer Senior Lecture in Biomedical Engineering |
Research Associate (postdoc): Postdoc will be required to perform animal studies and imaging techniques in order to test the success of a novel plasmonic nanoparticle drug delivery method to transiently open the blood brain barrier (BBB). This project is in collaboration with Dr. Zhenpeng Qin. Interested applicants please email CV and references to Dr. Hayenga and Dr. Qin.
Undergraduate Student: UTD students interested in researching the mechanobiological aspects of cardiovascular disease please contact the PI. Skills with computational and/or cell culture experience is a plus.
If you are interested in joining the Lab, please email me. Also state your current background, research interests and provide your CV with references.
